Whilst us Australians wait patiently for Daiya to hit our shores, we spend our time tentatively taste testing the paltry selection of cheese alternatives available. So far I’ve found Notzarella to be quite good and also several flavours of Cheezly (though I always forget which one when I go to buy it).
Recently I bought some Sheese from The Green Edge and was really impressed. I don’t actually eat stuff like this myself but use it occasionally in dishes for my family. That being said, I do have a nibble here and there and deemed this a ‘cheese’ worthy of future purchase. It has a strong bitey cheddar taste.
The flavour we tried was Strong Cheddar. I believe that this cheese comes from Scotland, so therefore there is no reason for Daiya to be holding out on us.
Photos are from Sheese’s website.

Srsly, Daiya for everyone!

About a month or so ago, I tried Australia’s newest vegan cheese for the first time. It is called Notzarella. And unlike other varieties I have tried in the past, it actually tastes good.
The guy that started it lives a couple of blocks away from me and spent a great deal of time working at Loving Hut. He wanted to create something that melted well (especially for pizzas). This stuff rules, and if you can get your hands on it, I highly recommend it.
It is $9.95 for a 500g block. Once opened, it will last about a week in the refrigerator (you can also chop it in half/quarters, freeze it, and take it out as needed). Mine lasted 7 days. That made 5 pizzas and 3 grilled tomato/cheese sandwiches. Shreds like a dream, so it really is perfect for pizza or nachos, and doesn’t liquefy when it melts.
The recent batches are palm oil free too!
Notzarella vegan pizza cheese prototype: bubbles, melts, stretches, & tastes fantastic.
Made from non-GM whole organic soybeans & other wholefood-type ingredients! Plus the usual vegan features: no cholesterol, no lactose, no nasty proteins like casein, no animals were harmed during the making of this cheese, although it was tested on willing humans.
All kinds of awesome. Still under development. Australian-made!

Heading off in a couple hours to get pizza with some friends I haven’t seen in a while, at my favourite pizza place in Sydney. Going to inhale one of these monsters, and probably a few froth monsters while I’m at it.
